Best Sci-Fi Books

Even dystopian books within this style possess that glimmer of hope. There is something about what human kind has or can generate that propels a simple fiction story in to the ranks of pure Sci-Fi & gives the reader permission to dream; & dream giant. "We created a kind of energy that is consuming the Earth & all of us must discover a brand spanking new planet." WOW. My imagination is on fire with what that energy could be & where they could possibly go.

The thing I find so thrilling about Science Fiction is exactly what Hubbard is referring to: it is feasible. This does not insinuate that it is going to happen now or that it is going to happen at all, but the chance of life on Mars or Alien Invasions or even the simplicity of Space Travel lifts my hope for the future. Sci-Fi, when done well, is at its core inspirational.

The other door Science Fiction opens is for the author to explore issues of philosophy, religion & culture. Because technological advancement & cultural shifts are fundamentally tied - this is proven throughout history - it is logical to think through the effects that the imagined know-how will have on the individuals who live with it.

of the best quotes from of the best written Sci-Fi books is not about know-how but about philosophy:

If done well a Science Fiction novel will include not only know-how but psychology, anthropology & sociology: generating a number of the most realistic & fleshed out cultures that have ever existed in fiction. The reason for this is the Science Fiction writer's dedication to writing about the actual & the feasible. One time you have researched how a nuclear reactor works & figured out a way to make it propel a space craft it is only natural to put the same hard work & dedication in to every aspect of the work.

Battlefield Earth by L. Ron Hubbard is by far of the best books I have ever read. Go ahead, laugh, you know you require to. Yes they invented Scientology. No I am not a Scientologist. But yes they did write of the best pure Science Fiction novels ever written. Hubbard's look in to the year 3000 includes science so detailed I  believed I could build it from his descriptions. They showed us a culture so torn apart it had mutated in to something recognizable as human, but fundamentally different. They also introduced aliens whose customs & language were so clearly depicted they rose out of the confines of fiction & in to the realm of feasible.

To further my point I require to take a moment to speak about of the classic Sci-Fi novels I think show how broad a style it can be, without losing its purity: Battlefield Earth, Dune, & Lilith's Brood.

Further in the series they explores questions of authority, government, multi-cultural conflicts & even addiction. Few books span across history & culture as as Dune. The science in lots of ways takes a back stool to the other issues discussed, but in spite of that, & I would propose because of it, Dune is a model of pure Sci-Fi.

Dune by Frank Herbert takes us out of our modern time but also out of the comforts of what they think about religiously/morally/biologically feasible. His science does not cease & hover-copters or galactic space travel; by introducing the idea of "Spice," sand worms & the culture of the "Fremen" Herbert can explore a number of the essential questions of human existence. Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose?
